AIRER FOOD SAFETY REGULATION CAMPAIGN UPDATE: Presentation to parliament yesterday

View the recording here:
Our presentation is followed by responses from New Zealand Food Safety and the Ministry for Regulation.

A number of you have already reported issues with Food Control Regulation to the Ministry of Regulation via their online reporting tool “Report a Red Tape Issue” and they have acknowledged those reports have an impact. If you would also like to make a report about the burden food safety regulation is having on your small business, complete their form at

Thank you to all of you for your support and chipping in to my Givealittle campaign. Big or small, your contributions are appreciated to help with the costs. If you’re still thinking of contributing, go to

While discussions with New Zealand Food Safety after our presentation were encouraging I firmly maintain that you join many of use in REFUSING TO PAY THE FOOD BUSINESS LEVY (being charged via your local council) if you support this campaign.

MPI / New Zealand Food Safety have proposed that we have another online meeting with them in 3 weeks. But they need to understand that we have to expect to see some real changes in the compliance and regulatory cost for our small businesses.

One positive step is that they have heard our plea about mobile food businesses with a home premise to prepare food as well as their mobile business having to pay the levy twice and have amended legislation so they only pay once like everyone else.

We have a video conference with the Minister for Food Safety, Andrew Hoggard this coming Monday.

It’s a private meeting however this is an opportunity for you to share anything with me, you’d really like him to know – e.g. what are the biggest issues you’re facing with the food compliance system? You can email me at fairfoodsafety@gmail.com or fill out this SURVEY(https://forms.gle/x5fx25mEzKnpjCTv9) I created for small food businesses on their experiences and views of food safety compliance if you have time. It’s anonymous – no identifying details are collected.

Prior to our presentation, we also met with Rachel Brooking, Labour’s spokesperson for food safety, who gave us some very helpful input about food safety policy before our presentation.
